Jupiter and Saturn Evolution by Gas Accretion onto a Solid Core
Introduction: The formation of Jupiter and Saturn is of increasing interest, not only for themselves, but to understand the differences and the similarities between our solar system and what had been observed of extra-solar planets. Because Jupiter and Saturn are mostly gaseous and probably accreted a large part of their masses from the Solar Nebula (SN), when the gas was still abundant [1], th...
متن کاملSolar System Formation Deduced from Observations of Matter
Aspects of our Solar System’s formation are deduced from observations of the chemical nature of matter. Massive cores are indicative of terrestrial-planet-composition-similarity to enstatite chondrite meteorites, whose highly-reduced state of oxidation may be thermodynamically stable in solar matter only at elevated temperatures and pressures. Consistent with the formation of Earth as envisione...
متن کاملBuilding the Terrestrial Planets: Constrained Accretion in the Inner Solar System
To date, no accretion model has succeeded in reproducing all observed constraints in the inner Solar System. These constraints include 1) the orbits, in particular the small eccentricities, and 2) the masses of the terrestrial planets – Mars’ relatively small mass in particular has not been adequately reproduced in previous simulations; 3) the formation timescales of Earth and Mars, as interpre...
متن کاملSubmillimeter Constraints on Circumstellar Disk Structure
We present a high spatial resolution submillimeter continuum survey of 24 circumstellar disks in the Taurus-Auriga and Ophiuchus-Scorpius star formation regions using the SMA. In the context of a simple model, we use broadband spectral energy distributions and submillimeter visibilities to derive constraints on some basic parameters that describe the structure of these disks. For the typical di...
متن کاملConstraints on an Outer Solar System Late Heavy Bombardment from Callisto’s Interior
Introduction: One difficulty in explaining the lunar late heavy bombardment (LHB) lies in identifying a source of impactors that survives at ~3.8 to 4 Gyr, so long after planet formation [1,2]. A leading theory is that the LHB was triggered by events in the outer solar system [3,4]. Any model that invokes an outer solar system source for the lunar LHB will also produce an intense bombardment on...
متن کاملThe outer solar system
The outer solar system extends beyond a heliocentric distance of 5AU. It contains the giant planets and their systems (rings and satellites), the Kuiper belt, the comets (except those which approach episodically the inner solar system) and, at its outer edge, the Oort cloud. The outer solar system physically corresponds to the region located outside the « snow line » which corresponded to the d...
